Trinidad Scorpion
Trinidad & Tobago · Fruity, then the sting
| Heat | 1,200,000–2,000,000 SHU |
|---|---|
| Species | Capsicum chinense |
| Homeland | Trinidad & Tobago |
| Character | Fruity, then the sting |
Named for the pointed tail that curls under the pod like a scorpion's sting, this Trinidadian pepper held the world heat record in its Butch T form (about 1,464,000 SHU), and its Moruga strain has tested to 2,000,000.
The cruel trick of the scorpion is that it tastes wonderful first — sweet, fruity, almost gentle — and the sting lands after you have already taken the second bite. Every taster learns this exactly once.
Matouk's builds its scorpion sauce the Trinidadian way, with the pepper's fruit left in front of the fire. It sits on the Overpeppered shelf for a reason: drops, not pours, and keep it away from eyes, kids, and pets.
